For Immediate More Information Release www.stopthesecrets.org Apr 5, 2001 615-356-9573 What did you say, Speaker Naifeh? A Nashville newspaper is reporting that you said you wanted to "open up the budget process" and "get members involved." This is pretty strange behavior for someone who has been active in killing, stalling, and deferring open government legislation that would make it easier for every Tennessean to access voting records and financial disclosure information of legislators. Oh wait just a minute, we think we may be able to explain this apparent contradiction. You want to open up the process to certain members of the legislature and full-time fat cat lobbyist who are paid big bucks to come to the legislature every day...BUT you don't want to open up the process to ordinary citizens and taxpayers so they can easily find out how you are voting to spend THEIR $18 billion. Time and again you prove that preserving the power of a small group of legislators is more important to you than being accountable to the citizens whom you are supposed to be serving. This is a slap in the face to every hard working Tennessean who sends you 6 cents every time they spend a dollar in Tennessee. Your arrogance toward the people of Tennessee is shameful. Stop-the-Secrets calls on you to do the right thing and support the package of bills known as The Accountability Reform Act of 2001.
