Dear Tennessee Voter,

You, the taxpaying citizen of Tennessee, have NO WAY of finding out how your Tennessee House of Representatives are voting. They can raise your taxes and spend YOUR tax money on education, highways, healthcare and do it in TOTAL SECRECY. The Tennessee House of Representatives is not required to record their committee votes!!!!!

Ok, you say, that may be so but voters can still visit the committee meetings in person and hear the voice votes? WRONG, like many Tennesseans I have been in committee meetings where the chairman calls for a voice vote and then, WITHOUT HEARING ONE VOTE, the chairman simply says "the ayes have it" and the meeting proceeds with everyone there fully aware that no audible votes were cast and absolutely no way to determine how members voted. THIS IS AN OUTRAGE AND MUST BE FIXED!! This is NOT a partisan issue, it is a voters' rights issue! The state Senate does require votes to be recorded but not the house.

Of course, you may not be able to get into a committee meeting in the first place because THE LEGISLATURE IS NOT REQUIRED TO OPEN ALL MEETINGS TO THE VOTERS OF TENNESSEE. This too is absolutely wrong and must be changed!!

The voters of Tennessee must demand, at the very least, that all committee meetings be open, that final votes on bills be recorded AND the voting records be posted on the Legislature's web page so the voters can easily access them. This is, after all, OUR tax money and OUR state.

I urge you to support House Bill 754/Senate Bill 826 "The Political Accountability Reform act of 2001" sponsored by Representative David Davis and Senator David Fowler. Please see detailed info below and contact your state representative and senator and tell them the voters of Tennessee demand to know how their representatives are voting. There is, very simply, NO GOOD REASON to oppose this bill.

Please read the information below and then email-call-fax your own representative and senator. Then email-fax-call the committee members listed below and let them know you support this Bill. The business of Tennessee will continue to be conducted in secret unless YOU ACT, it's that simple. PLEASE HELP!!!!
